Final Scale 1/16" or 1/8"
Professor,
I was not clear if we had decided on 1/16" = 1'. I am assuming that that will be the final scale and am currently planning to build my models according to this, however I personally feel this is to small and would rather move up to 1/8" = 1'. Please clarify this for me.

For next class, the same items we have been talking about, for pin up.
Thesis statement
Thesis word diagram relative to program
Plans at each level
Sections- 1 long (2 at final)
Section – 2 short (3 at final)
Perspective
Axonometric diagrams:
Volume
Circulation
Structure
Main elevation which shows idea
Complete large scale model .
Latest comments:
Michael- focus on showing structure in section and with plan the organization of circulation relative to structure.
Anthony- lower plan with dynamic section
Alex- completing your model, so you can finalize the 3d form
Rebecca- understanding the structure between the archive of the ground and exhibit using a frame (mainly horizontal with connection to archive)
Adrian- make the connector bar for the view to understand the other volumns
Scott- work on circulation
John- simply volumn, I recall the earlier plan discussion now….and want to comment on it
Richard- draw, work on structure in terms of light
Steve- clarify form and circulation use my suggestions
Li- keep going, relate structure and circulation to thesis
The rest of you need to catch up and I am not sure where you stand.

John, Rebekka, Lee Ann--Aldo Van Eyck is the Architect
John, you should also consider swapping the entry and the auditorium-.... sketch this through.
Rebekka- can you post Van Eyck sketch series that shows the variations in his plans re the circle use ...on the blog for everyone. I have attached this one for John to start with.

several of you emailed me:
tomorrow due:
new concept model,
drawings:
axon diagrams of concept,
(the below can be on trace)
all plans,
sections- long and transverse
photos of model- montage into site model or views.

anthony, this is a fox and fowle architects building from 2004, they have a website
rotate view to see properly.... the cut of the ground should be symbolic to the tomb in the ground, brining down light should also be symbolic relative to your thesis
plan samples which relate to some of your concepts from last class
The frame in relation to exhibit
The frame offers a flexible element for the function of the exhibit space. Naimo made a plane which was framed and can be said to relate to this idea of exhibit.
frames posted
I posted some of these frame projects for two reason:
1. because we need to think about the structure/ rhythm in conjunction with a thesis of life/ death/ remembrance. If you over lap death and remembrance then the place should indicate this by having a mirrored form with the planning of the program pieces!
2. we are going to move up in scale soon and have to think about structure/ skin;
I like the fact a group of you pinned up the larger site plan to remind us of this.

Alex - Grant's Tomb: Concepts
These two Images represent the conceptual ideas for the use of ribbons as a means of creating structure and space in the project. Feedback from anyone on the approach of these three-dimension models as well as the board setup below would be appreciated (the background was originally white, but due to the difficulty of finding a file type on my mac that Blogger.com will accept led to the replacement with gray).

Concept Sketches / Pictures of Grants Tomb.

The first image is the sketches done on the wall in the hallway last tuesday, basic diagrams showing very basic concepts for approaching the project. The second image are the ariel and perspective shots complied as part of the site study which is currently hanging in the room. Unfortunately no matter how I try to upload the board of technical drawings (as .jpg or .pdf) the website rejects them, if anyone else has them they should be uploaded as well.

Thesis- life/ death/ remembrance relative to(program):

(3) models 1/32 scale which are transformative to
scaling your thesis from plane to frame on the site

2. plane-mass-to frame
3. frame
Site analysis conclusions:
3 grids: city, tomb/death, life of river view which should relate to your thesis

For Friday
Professor would like 3 models:
1) Structure & rhythm with planes with reference to the plaza surface
2) Define how the planes become a frame
-Relate to thesis
-articulate the frame
-plane thickness relative to the program
- transformation of the program
3) Combination of the first 2 models
Sketches on trace to accompany the models and your individual thesis of a pavilion relating to life death and remembrance.
Along with this professor would like everyone to have their own site model with the parameters that we discussed in class
Also be sure to complete the assigned building for the site with Rich Alex and Nauma have provided.

for tomorrow
Rebekkah, All:
Everyone is producing their own 1/32” site model without surrounding buildings. 3 schemes, each scheme should have associated plan and section sketches on trace for tomorrow.
-auditorium: 1,500 sloped floor,
- Terrace/ overlook to river
We are starting with this general program placement until we develop a concept, an understanding of scale, monmnetality, for this new place.
-Anthony to bring in drawings for Tshumi building in context toColumbia campus.
The program is as follows, Visitor’s Park:
8,000 sq ft for:
-exhibit space of which should have an exterior component, -auditorium: 1,500 sloped floor,
- Terrace/ overlook to river
5,000 sq ft:
- Archive, (library) with reading roomCollect images, precedence to continue the discussion.
Site information, to be completed for next class:
-Last class was not fully productive because the given site drawings were pinned up without:
- site parameters: being 20’ deep space below ground, (includes long section)
- Transverse section cut at the visitor’s overlook
- Total of (3) plan cuts: at tomb level, at ground, and roof.
-These same 5 drawings listed above require an overall of the proportion systems of the circle and square geometries from the tomb. (Lee Ann is working on this)
The larger site model is on hold, till we see the smaller 1/32” scale model with surrounding buildings.
-map of area color discussed with Adrian
-history to be simplified and origin tomb location to be completed by Matt and Michael-Anthony to bring in drawings for Tshumi building in context to

Drawings
We have .dwg's and .pdf's of most of the site. I have placed them in a file entitled 'Grant's Tomb' on the pdrive in the folder 'arch-201-w01' which I created earlier in the semester for the bird blind site drawings. |

1. bring in and pin up site information discussed
2. bring in last project models and drawings
3. bring in paper, cutting matte, cutting tools, clear tape, scissors, trace ...for model exercises.

all: site information announcement
I post three pieces of sandborn map which can assist you in building models and drawings.
Check with the other classes if a acad file exist since i do not see it in the faculty drop box.
I will check as well along with any 3d information... Regardless these maps give your enough information to do your work.
